Firstly, these are a list of symptoms you may feel (but not limited to);

Abdominal discomfort
Diarrhea
Dry mouth
Rapid heartbeat or palpitations
Tightness or pain in chest
Shortness of breath
Dizziness

Mid life for me, as most people, is a time of personal review, trying to fathom the twists and turns in life that have brought me to where I am today. Among the questions I have asked myself is: What led me to specialize in treating social anxiety? Upon private reflection, the most compelling reason is that I, like many of my clients, have suffered from that disorder. We are in good company. Just over 10% of North Americans can expect to suffer from social anxiety at some time in our lives.

Among the questions I have asked myself is: What led me to specialize in treating social anxiety? Upon private reflection, the most compelling reason is that I, like many of my clients, have suffered from that disorder. We are in good company. Just over 10% of North Americans can expect to suffer from social anxiety at some time in our lives.

Social phobia (social anxiety disorder) is characterized by excessive or unreasonable fear of being judged by others in social or performance situations such as public speaking, eating, or working. The anxious anticipation, avoidance, and distress we suffer in these feared situation(s) interferes significantly with our everyday activities, and can lead to a life of underachievement and loneliness.

The good news for people suffering from social anxiety is that the condition is entirely treatable using Cognitive Behavioral therapy. To understand how this treatment works, it is important to understand two things about social phobia. The first is that it is a learned response. This means, like any bad habit, these learned responses can be replaced with other, more adaptive behaviours ones that leave us feeling calm and confident rather than fearful and avoidant.

The second thing to be aware of, although social phobia can seem like an overwhelmingly huge problem, it can be broken into three parts. The three parts are physical reactions in our body, distortions in our thinking, and changes in our behavior associated with high anxiety. Once broken into parts, each of these three parts may be targeted with a set of treatment techniques that can be readily taught to practically anyone.

Physical reactions such as changes in breathing, muscle tension, flushing, and sweating can be relieved through the use of relaxation techniques. Distortions in our thinking, that cause us to perceive social situations as more dangerous or threatening than they really are, can be managed through a procedure called cognitive restructuring. Last, and most important, behavior changes can be dealt with through exposure. Exposure works by teaching our nervous system not to overreact.

In my experience, the most effective way to provide the combined treatments of relaxation, cognitive restructuring and exposure is in a weekly group of 6 to 8 people, over a 12 week period. Over the past 8 years, my cognitive behavioral groups have been 80 to 90 percent successful with socially anxious people as young as 13 and as old as 85. Of course, most people with social anxiety have to be encouraged to join a therapy group. I simply tell them, Invest your anxiety in a calmer future!. The object of analysis ids to bring you to a moment of liberating enlightenment, and one can be fairly confident of a release with about 6-10 sessions of therapy. Suggestion therapy and Neurolinguistic Programming follows to build confidence and to re-programme the subconscious mind in much the same way as a computer engineer might load new programmes to replace old and outdated ones.

Katie came as close as is possible to having it all. Great job, loving family, boyfriend, social life That was until she developed anxiety

There were rumours of redundancy in our department. Just rumours. But that was enough to start me off. I became very anxious. Every Monday, Id head for work, convinced I was about to be told to go. I started worrying about what Id do if I was made redundant and despite years of experience in my field, I convinced myself that I was unemployable, that no other company would consider me. I felt useless

Gradually, it was robbing me of all my confidence, first in my professional self, then in me as a person. Its bizarre but had I been made redundant, Id have just gotten on with it and Id have probably been OK. But the stress of my job and the worry over IF my name was on the list, that was enough to trigger the anxiety.

As her anxiety grew, so her relationships became affected. I felt nobody understood what I was going through. Not even my boyfriend. He tried to be supportive but neither he nor my family could really understand. Thats why its so important to people with anxiety to talk to somebody who KNOWS what its like. Its ironic really but I was never made redundant! Far from it, the company I work for were actually really supportive and agreed to let me have time off. I had days and days of growing increasingly obsessed about my anxiety and spent hours trawling the internet for a miracle cure.

Katie found The Linden Method and although initially skeptical about some of the claims, decided to give it a try.

E-mail Anxiety! What May Come With Your New Business Opportunity!

Too many people are now suffering from e-mail anxiety due to what they think to be great products or mlm programs that they have found on the internet. Here you may find some steps to avoid developing this disorder.



Are you suffering from e-mail anxiety? If you are not sure then ask yourself a few questions.



1. Have you recently encountered what you think to be a really great business opportunity or product that you would love to resell online?
2. Have you created a web page and began e-mail advertising on your new product or program?
3. Have you bought and paid for quality leads?
4. Have you signed up for more than just one program?
5. Are you spending more than 12 hours a day at your computer?


If you answered yes to at least 2 of these questions then you may be suffering from e-mail anxiety.



We have found a program/product or programs/products that we truly believe in. Then the hard part comes and we have to find a way to get our program/product in front of our customers. We learn that we have to advertise. Not having much money may limit our advertising so we begin with all of the free advertising sites or programs that we can find. We begin with the traffic exchange systems. We click and click and click away until our poor little fingers are cramping. We sit back and watch our mailbox as we anxiously wait for e-mails to come pouring in our inbox with signups to our program or sales for our product. We get lots of traffic to our site and a few free signups as members to add to our mailing list, but no sales. So we figure that we are going to have to devise a new strategy because we must be doing something wrong. Now we sign up for an ezine directory giving us an average of 50 people to mail to every day. We sit back and watch our mailbox as we anxiously wait for e-mails to come pouring in our inbox with signups to our program or sales for our product. We have worse luck with this approach because we get no visitors to our site and only a couple of free signups per month. So its back to the drawing board. Lets try a safe list. Putting our e-mail advertisement in front of 700 people at once should bring in at least a good couple of paying members or a couple of sales right? WRONG. Now we have an e-mail box full of noloop e-mails that we are just deleting at once because there are so many to read! If we are doing this then so are the rest, so therefore our e-mails are not getting read. Ok so maybe the free advertising route isnt the way to go to get the quick response that we are looking for. Hmmm here it says that we can send our promotion to over 50,000 people for as little as $15.00. Sounds like a good deal, so lets try that. Now we learn what FFA pages are. Geez! Our e-mail inbox is flooded again with different types of e-mails that appear to be coming from some type of FFA pages. These are harder to determine which ones can be deleted since they came from many different types of e-mail addresses. So we have to handpick through these to make sure we are not deleting something important. And dont you get so frustrated and angry when you find those that trick you into opening there e-mails with the tricky subject lines like, Your payment has been processed and then when you open the e-mail its just another marketer trying to sell you something? I mean give me a break! Who wants to do business with a sneaky little twerp that hides the truth from you? Ok so we chalk our $15.00 up on a loss. We are NOT I repeat NOT giving up on this! There HAS to be a way to get our product in front of the people that count. I know that others are doing it and so can I. I guess I am going to have to break down and pay for something. Here is an ad for a Bulk opt in mailing list of 300,000 spam free people for $70.00. They say that you pay for what you get, so lets see if that old scenario holds any truth to it. We are anxiously waiting for the e-mails to start pouring in. I myself am personally afflicted with e-mail anxiety and can not wait to find a cure! Stay tuned for future updates on e-mail anxiety.

Money Tips: Overcoming financial anxiety

When the term financial planning is used many people get a sick and
sinking feeling.
Like math anxiety, financial anxiety can be debilitating.
Below are some tips to help alleviate your money anxiety.

#1. Change your focus
Instead of thinking the financial planning process is drudgery
think in terms of a treasure hunt.
Everyone likes the idea of finding treasure. When planning your
financial future you are either finding hidden
treasures by retracing your steps to find where you have misplaced
your gold, or you are placing your treasure in a safe place to use
later. By changing your focus of what your planning really entails,
you can think clearly and really concentrate on what your goals are.

#2. Have fun.
By having fun when managing your "golden eggs", you allow yourself to
be creative and look at opportunities in an optimistic light. Think
of yourself as royalty or a salty ole pirate who has untold riches of
silver and gold, fine linens and silks from far away lands. Trinkets
specially made from hidden continents and various wonders never
having been seen before. This is all yours, and you decide how to
use it. When we enjoy what we do, we tend to spend more time doing
it.

#3. Relax
Financial trends are like tides of the ocean. Sometimes the tide is
high, other times it is low. But the tide happens all the time.
The most important thing to remember is that it is not the
timing of the market that is important, but the time in the market.
Plan for the long term.
Be patient, relax, and breathe. Don't over react to negative
information (low tide). Low tide may be the best time to get into
the water.

#4. Become an expert about yourself.

What is your attitude about money? Are you one who spends aimlessly?
Do you spend money you don't have?
Do you dream of the big score and don't put anything away just in
case? By understanding your money habits you open the window of
opportunity to overcome perceived money weaknesses. This allows you
appropriately handle your anxiety.

Financial anxiety is real.
Learning to manage your emotions about money is the first step to
overcoming financial challenges you have.

Maximize your dreams.
Overcome obstacles by organizing your life.
Network for net-worth.
Enjoy the moment.

Overcoming Anxiety

In order to create the healthy, happy and harmonious reality we all desire, we will need to create emotional harmony.

This process can be divided into six basic steps:

1. Recognize our emotions.
2. Accept them as they are.
3. Release them when necessary.
4. Understand how they are created.
5. Transform the negative ones through understanding and create more positive ones.
6. Transcend them.

Here we will present a short profile of some of the basic emotions. We have developed specific questionnaires for understanding each one.

ANXIETY AND WORRY

Anxiety and worry, although obviously forms of fear, have become so common that it is worth looking at them separately.

Anxiety often concerns the factors of time and results. We are anxious because we fear that we will not have enough time to complete all that we have planned, or that the result will not be successful, perfect or acceptable to the others.

We worry often for the same reasons, but also when we fear something may not turn out as we hope. That "something" may concern ourselves, our children, or our parents or spouse, which of course, ultimately, through our attachment to these people, has to do with ourselves.

We learn to worry as children, and this becomes a habit causing us to search for issues to be anxious or worrisome about, even when there is nothing really important enough to merit such a concern.

We may wonder at times why our mind thinks so much about a particular matter, creating anxiety and worry, when in reality that matter is not so important to us.

Anxiety and worry contain a feeling of danger, that we are unable to achieve what we want or protect ourselves from others or events. It is a form of self-doubt and lack of faith in ourselves, others and the Divine Laws of the universe.

"Soul-utions"

For this reason, we would do well to employ a daily program of:
1. Exercises
2. Breathing techniques
3. Deep relaxation with positive projection,
4. Meditation
5. A healthy diet
6. Creative self-expression.

These activities will help reorganize our energy patterns, freeing us from the hold of negative thoughts.

Positive antidotes to anxiety and worry could be:

1. Faith in divine wisdom and justice; that all will occur as is necessary and beneficial for our growth process. This belief allows us to surrender to the wisdom of the universe and feel secure even when externally we are being challenged by difficult situations.

This does not mean that we do not seek to create the reality we prefer, but simply that we feel sure that the results of our efforts will be the best for our growth regardless of whether they are what we prefer.

2. Confidence in our ability to deal with whatever life brings us.
Why should we doubt that we can deal with whatever comes? We have encountered so many tests in life, and here we are ? alive and reading this. We have survived. We, as spirit, are greater than any possible human experience.

3. Realizing that we are worthy of love and acceptance as we are.

Much of our anxiety has to do with our doubts about our self-worth which we tend to measure by what others think and by the results of our efforts. Accepting ourselves as we are removes much anxiety.

4. Living in and enjoying the present moment.

Our fears, regrets, anxiety and worry seldom have to do with the present, but rather with the past and future. But neither actually exist. The past exists only to the degree that we carry it in our minds. The future is equally an illusion.

Focusing on what we are doing in the present moment releases us from anxiety and worry.

Does Social Anxiety Hold You Back?

In the "Anxiety Disorders" section of the manual entitled "Diagnostic Criteria from DSM IV," which is used for the diagnosis of mental health conditions, there are 12 anxiety diagnoses covered.

The fifth, and what may appear to be a soft diagnosis, is Social
Phobia (Social Anxiety Disorder). In contrast to "Posttraumatic Stress Disorder," "Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder" and "Panic Disorder" this diagnosis may seem to be lighter than the rest.

Please don't be fooled by names or the sound of names or even the fact that many of the others have achieved more press time. Social phobia is a very real threat to the quality of life for many individuals.

What is Social Anxiety Disorder? Glad you asked. Following is a list of life areas impacted by social anxiety --

1. Meeting new people
2. Answering the door
3. Interacting with merchant clerks at banks, grocery stores etc.
3. Setting appointments with doctors offices etc. 4. Attending church
5. Buying or returning items at retail outlets 6. Sick days where your anxiety has made you sick 7. Driving (fear other drivers looking at or thinking of you)
8. Paying at the gas station 9. Eating in front of other people 10. Signing your name in front of others 11. Attending or hosting social events 12. Dating
13. Talking in a small or large group 14. Expressing your opinion 15. Performance situations, such as playing on an athletic team, singing in a choir etc. 16. May or may not have panic attacks 17. Fear of what others are thinking of you 18. Fear of being embarrassed or humiliated

Next is a general physical symptom list of the physical signs of
social anxiety --

1. Blushing
2. Sweating
3. Dizziness
4. Heart palpitations
5. Muscle tension
6. Dry mouth
7. Shaking
8. Nausea
9. Diarrhea
10. Headache

These are a few of the symptoms of social anxiety as experienced
in life areas and physically. Many folks have social anxiety but do not realize that this is what they struggle with. Oftentimes thinking about or engaging in any of the activities listed above will induce anxiety.

The real danger with this disorder is that it can subtly grow into a monster. Left unattended, social anxiety can reshape the life that you should be living into one that is centered around avoidance of anxiety. Some of you are aware that you have anxiety and fight with it constantly. Many others are not aware of anxiety as the culprit, even though it's impacting all these life areas. That's powerful!

Ongoing social anxiety can result in developing a pattern of avoidance, whereby you begin putting off many of life's activities. Too often, you have only the best of excuses, but if you suffer from social anxiety, it's really anxiety driving your life's bus.

There are many keys in the overcoming of anxiety. At the top is bolstering your self-confidence. Ironically enough, the more withdrawn you become while feeing anxious and avoiding activities, the stronger the social anxiety becomes.

A FEW KEY AREAS TO TARGET IN OVERCOMING SOCIAL ANXIETY:

1. Participate in activities which increase esteem and a sense of personal safety

2. Establish an area of expertise or mastery and allowing those abilities to be present in anxiety situations

3. Learn relaxation strategies that become serenity-hygiene habits

4. Challenge irrational thought patterns that support the anxiety

5. Keep an anxiety scale journal to chart goals and progress

6. Seek a caring individual to hold you accountable to your goals

7. Know that peace and anxiety cannot exist at the same time. Any ritual which brings peace into your life is a great tool to use to eliminate anxiety

8. Practice knowing that you are loved and have a right to live a joy-filled life!

This is your life! If you find yourself angry over being anxious, that's GOOD -- but only if you direct your anger at anxiety and allow it to become an energizer in your efforts to reclaim your life.

Winning My Battle With Anxiety

I was very outgoing as a child. I'd put on plays in front of my parents, sing to records and put on shows. I was like that all through both elementary school and high school. Nothing scared me and my aspirations were high.

I began college as a Theater major and switched midstream to a Communications major. I pictured myself as the next big 'News Anchor'. I'd even auditioned at the Connecticut School of Broadcasting, impromptu, and got accepted.

At the age of twenty, during my sophomore year in college, I lost most of the sight in my left eye. To say I was frightened is an understatement. I was terrified. But, I handled it like a trooper, even on those nights when I was alone in the hospital not knowing what was wrong with me. When family visited, I appeared strong. At night, I cried alone.

Shortly after I got out of the hospital I went to see a stage production of "Fiddler on the Roof". I remember it well because that was the first of many, many terrifying experiences. It was when I had my first anxiety attack.

During the show, my heart began racing so fast I thought I was dying. My chest constricted and I couldn't get enough air. I hyper-ventilated. The more I panicked, the worse it got. I ran up the isle of the theater and headed straight for the phone. I needed to talk to my parents. I didn't know why, but their voices were what I needed to hear. I thought I was going crazy.

Immediately, my doctor was contacted to see if any of the medications I was given for my detached retina were the cause. The answer was no. I was told to go home and lay down.

The subject wasn't brought up again, but I suffered the attacks in agonizing silence.

About seven months after my loss of site, I was out with my fianc, (at the time). Suddenly, I couldn't see with BOTH eyes open. My heart began to race again as we rushed to the hospital. By the time we arrived, my verbal and motor skills were gone and the entire left side of my body was numb. You could have cut off my left arm and I wouldn't have felt it. I was screaming inside but when the nurse asked me to describe what I was feeling, all I could get out was, "Bah, Ah." I couldn't form any words, (although I knew what I wanted to say), and I thought for certain that either I was having a stroke or was going to die of a brain tumor.

Well, fortunately, I was diagnosed with what's called a "classic migraine", which impairs verbal and motor skills. I regained those in about twenty minutes and then I got the worst headache I'd ever had in my life. The doctor said it was stress induced. It hasn't happened since, thank God.

And that was that.

As time went by my attacks came in cycles. They subsided for some time while in college, but shortly after I got married they seemed to come "out of the blue". Not often, but each time they were frightening. I didn't know then what I know now, and as I reflect back, I can see where I literally talked myself into a worse frenzy.

I didn't have the courage to seek any help. I thought this was something I just had to live with. I'd been examined by doctors for my eye and for the classic migraine and all of the test results said I was just fine.

So, I went on with my life.

At 25 I suffered a miscarriage. The baby didn't abort itself, it died in my womb and the doctors had to remove it. I was sixteen weeks pregnant at the time. When I got home from the hospital, I wanted to grieve, but my husband, (at the time), and I were on different wavelengths. He thought I should get on with it and over it, and I just couldn't let go of my loss or my grief. That's when my anxiety attacks came back with a vengeance. I had heart palpitations that were so frightening I thought I'd have a heart attack. I worked for a ski area and commuted to New Hampshire, many times driving several hours alone, on weekends and suffered some horrific anxiety attacks while driving. He, (my ex-husband), didn't really understand what was going on with me or sympathize very much. I can't blame him for not understanding it, but it didn't make it easier.

I kept it inside. And it festered.

At the age of twenty seven my husband and I split up. My anxiety attacks grew worse and worse until it almost got to the point where I couldn't function. But, I forced myself to. I went to work, I drove even when my hands were so numb I couldn't feel them, and I talked to people when inside it took every ounce of strength I had to appear "normal". It was exhausting.

I was petrified. I couldn't eat alone for fear I'd choke. I couldn't eat in restaurants for fear of embarrassment. I'd stare at a plate of food and literally be starving -- unable to get it down.

The advent of my divorce really was the catalyst to my first encounter with professional help. What originally was to be marriage counseling turned out to be individual talk therapy. I knew my marriage was over, but the anxiety needed to be dealt with and this proved to be the beginning of my journey.

Adjusting after the divorce along with dealing with my anxiety attacks was quite challenging. It was very multi-layered. I found that talk therapy helped. Not just with the divorce, but with the anxiety.

The talk therapy ended after about a year and a half when my therapist moved to another state. However, the knowledge and insight I gained was invaluable and put me on the path to recovery.

In the years that passed, I had my bouts with anxiety. I did extensive research on the subject and read countless self help books. I was always reaching for more answers; for more assurance. As a result, I knew better how to deal with the attacks. The negative self talk and the fear of loss of control diminished as I developed the ability to handle the attacks with my mind by gently talking my way through them.

They didn't completely go away, however.

In 1996 I met my fianc. One of the biggest challenges he helped me to meet, unknowingly, was facing my anxiety. He is a pilot and on one of our very first dates, he surprised me with a trip to the airport to take his plane for a flight.

As my heart raced madly, (for I'd never been on a smaller plane), I decided to face my fear. That flight was one of the most beautiful things I've ever experienced. Had I succumbed to my fear, I would never have seen the beautiful moon and stars on that clear and magical night. That taught me a wonderful lesson. I was stronger than my anxiety. I just needed to draw upon my strength.

In 1997 I went to a new primary doctor for severe intestinal pain. Upon examination, she told me that I had a stomach condition caused by Chronic Anxiety Disorder. She had only a brief idea of my history. But, after several questions, etc., she wisely came to her diagnosis. It was then that I began some more talk therapy, on her advise, and started taking a small amount of medicine, called Klonopin, to relieve some of the symptoms of anxiety.

In 1997 I became the lead singer of a wedding band. During my audition my anxiety got so bad that I could feel my knees knocking and my lips were tingling! Try singing like that! But, somehow I made it through and got in. There was more than one "gig" where I'd feel my hands and mouth get "tingly" and my legs would begin to buckle. But, I went on and made myself do it. I think that it pushed me further into discovering my own inner strength. If I could handle an anxiety attack in front of three hundred people, (and believe me, it wasn't easy as I clung to the microphone stand to hold me up), then I could conquer this!

In the years that have passed, I have continued my research on anxiety. I still read many books dealing with the subject and put into practice many of the psychological things that help keep anxiety attacks at bay and/or under control.

I no longer use talk therapy, but what I learned in the process will stay with me forever.

It's not a battle that's won overnight, although the disorder seems to appear overnight. The road is long, and there are many ways to effectively treat anxiety. I think the most important things in helping a sufferer of anxiety are the support of those who love you, understanding the disorder, the faith that you will overcome it and the knowledge that you are not alone in your struggle.

Believe me, you are not.

That is great news to those who suffer day in and day out, year in and year out. I have and I know that you can too.

THE SYMPTOMS
For me it started with heart palpitations. My thoughts immediately steered to fear. Then my throat would become dry so I could not swallow. Then my body would feel "weird". Dizziness and blurred vision. By this time I was convinced that I was about to die. I kept waiting for the symptoms to get worse and they did. I use to suffer from panic attacks so badly that I had to go to the hospital by ambulance. I was so embarrassed when the doctor checked me and told me that there was nothing wrong with me. When I had to go grocery shopping I would get a funny feeling in my stomach before I left the house. Once I got inside the grocery store I felt like I had to run out or else I would become overwhelmed. I dreaded the thought that I might have a panic attack in public. I had to talk to myself and prayed up and down each and every aisle of the store. I knew that if I ran out, my family would not have food and I would have to start all over again. The people in the store had no idea the personal torture I was experiencing. People at church had no idea how hard it was to sit in a large crowd.

AWARENESS When the symptoms first started, I had no idea what was happening to me. One day I was watching T.V. and some people were on a show talking about the symptoms and the light went on, "That's me! That's what I have been going through". That was the beginning of my healing! Knowledge is power. I thank God that He allowed me to turn to the channel and hear those people talking. I also helped me to know that I was not alone. I suppose that those of you who suffer from the effects of anxiety are glad to hear that you are not alone.

Steps to Overcoming

1) READ Read as much as possible about anxiety and understand what are some of the causes. (Email me for link to books).

2)PROFESSIONAL HELP Go to a counselor or therapist to get to the bottom of the anxiety. The physical discomforts are trying to get your attention - Pay attention to a greater dis-ease within. Pray for God to send you to the right person. He will.

3)RELAXATION Listen to a tape or CD for RELAXATION This was one of the things that helped me tremendously. I needed to reprogram my mind with positive and true statements that were life giving and empowering. Click below for CD's and cassette tapes to help you overcome anxiety and panic attacks. 4) EXERCISE Physical excercise has tremendous value. It releases chemicals that generate good feelings, called pheromones. It's good to feel good!

5) HEALING IN GOD'S WORD Meditate on scriptures that enhance your trust in God. One scripture that helps me when I really let it sink in is: Matthew 5:25-34. Am I not more than a bird to God? You better believe it and so are you! Birds don't work or store up food yet God takes care of them. Wow! The next time you see a bird think about that!

6) MAP YOUR JOURNEY Create a time line by drawing on a sheet of paper when your first signs of discomfort started. Write down what major events happened at that same time. Note the year/date. Go back as far as you can. This process helps you to take a bird's eye view of your life. When I did this exercise, I found that the first time I experienced a full panic attack was in 1984 and I had just made a major move from someone very dear to me. I also discovered that there agoraphobia before any panic attack ever appeared. Do this it will help you understand what has been going on and what triggers extreme anxiety. (You may need to use than one piece of paper).

7)God's Power to Heal
Remember,God still heals. We must let go of all the passed disappointments, and betrayals. God is not like any human being with whom we have had a relationship. God faithful and just. Jesus walked this earth so you can talk to Him about yours trials. Pray as the early disciples did, "Lord, increase my faith". FAITH is the opposite of anxiety. Faith not only pleases God but keeps us trusting in God's fatherly care. I am a witness!! Praise God!

If just one person is helped by this article, I will have accomplished what God set me out to do -Help someone along our earthly journey.

Anxiety: A Very Real Threat to a Happy Life

Anxiety is the most frequently occurring mental health disorder in the United States, according to the US Surgeon General. There are millions of people who are diagnosed with it every year. A small amount of anxiety helps to get us going, but when it becomes more severe, it can be overwhelming. If you start feeling like it's more than it should be, you may want to visit a doctor for a clinical diagnosis. The National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH) has estimated that 19 million Americans aged 18 to 54 suffer from anxiety disorder every year.

Fear is generally the basis for anxiety disorders. All of us have felt its tingle before we do something that makes us nervous, such as making a public speech or going out on a first date. When that feeling becomes more constant and starts to invade our daily lives, then it has become a disorder and it's time to get some help.

One of the most familiar and studied forms of anxiety disorder is the panic attack. The patient usually feels his or her heart race and also pain or pressure in the chest. Generalized anxiety disorder is another of the more commonly diagnosed forms. It manifests as constant worry that is beyond normal bounds. Other symptoms include a lengthy event lasting six months or longer, muscle tension, difficulty staying focused on a subject, trouble sleeping, and feeling continuously irritated. Panic attacks don't usually result from general anxiety disorder, but it can still make life difficult. That type of worry is exhausting, takes away interest in one's life, and can cause mood swings. Some other anxiety disorders include social anxiety, obsessive compulsive behavior, various phobias, and post- traumatic stress syndrome.

Diagnosing these disorders is not easy as they incorporate brain functions and there is still a lot to be learned about them. No one in the medical profession has yet learned why a particular person's fear response is amplified so much more than another's. Researchers do know that five neurotransmitters become disturbed in these disorders and medications have been developed to treat them. They include anti-depressants and anti- anxiety drugs.

Thankfully there are a number of options for treating and even curing anxiety disorders. Western medicine relies on medications and psychotherapy. Some people see two practitioners: a psychologist to counsel with, and a psychiatrist for prescription medication. This combination of treatments can be quite effective. Tranquilizers from the class called "benzodiazepines" are often prescribed and often work quite well. Some of these brand names are Xanax, Valium, and Ativan and they help those suffering from panic and anxiety. Most of these aren't to be used for the long-term. Anti-depressants have proven more effective for those with acute anxiety disorders. The best ones seem to be the selective serotonin re-uptake inhibitors (SSRI) s. Some of these are Celexa, Zoloft, Prozac, and Paxil.

There are a number of alternative medicines being practiced today and some people prefer not to take pharmaceuticals. If you are in this category it may take trial and error as well as time and patience to find relief. Cognitive Behavior Therapy (CBT) is an approach that zeroes in on the thought processes that cause us to worry. Its goal is to help separate realistic thoughts from those that are overblown. Some other things to try are relaxation training, desensitization, breathing, meditating, acupuncture, homeopathy, and biofeedback. Massage therapy, chiropractics, and just walking can also be of help.

How To Help Your Child With First Day Anxiety

Summer vacation is coming to a close. All the trips, fun activities, and camps are soon to be wonderful memories. Hopefully, your child or children had a great period of down time and are refreshed and ready for a new and eventful school year.

I know many parents are quite ready for the new and eventful school year. As much as we love our children, they can be exhausting for some parents. Sometimes the down time the summer vacation offers breeds some unexpected and even undesirable behaviors. Whatever the case, school starting brings a pleasant reprieve for many parents.

Happy Day, The first day of school is just around the corner. What do we do next as responsible parents? Run to the store to buy all the necessities to have a successful student. The clothes, tools of the trade, everything that could possible be necessary. We help them pack that bag and send them on their way.

One major thing many parents tend to forget for whatever reason.

You may have prepared your little one with all the material items he or she may need, but how about the head? Yes, the head and I don't mean what's on top. I mean the inside. Their beautiful head may very well be filled with a load of anxiety.

For some children this anxiety can be very real and overwhelming. For some, it's healthy. For some children however, the anxiety of the beginning of school can be terrifying. Many different situations that may seem small to adults can be extremely difficult for some children.

For the sake of empathy, I'll give two examples. First, the simple act of getting on a school bus and finding a place to sit can be terrifying. If your child is not the most popular or even close, he or she may not know many of the other students on that bus.

The act of having to walk down that isle on the bus while everyone watches and then try to find a seat to share can be sickening for some children. Of course, this happens first thing in your child's day so this could have an impact on the rest of the day.

OK, maybe not the rest of the day. Maybe just until lunch time. This is the second example I promised you. For some children, the act of trying to get place to sit while eating lunch can be very difficult as well. Try to imagine having to walk into a room and find a place to sit when you are not a confident child. It's easy if when you walk into the room and the others start yelling your name but that doesn't happen very often for the average child, let alone the quite child that may not have many friends.

Based on my own experience, these are very real, uncomfortable situations for some children that should not be minimized.

What can you do for your child? How to help your child with that first day anxiety? I'll tell you. Here are some proven ideas. Talk to your child about these scenarios. Make sure your child knows he or she is not alone when it comes to understanding how difficult these situations are. Try to instill a sense of control which will ease the sense of anxiety. It won't get rid of the problem, but a sense of control empowers people including children.

Give your child real control over the situation by sharing a few concrete suggestions to use that he/she is comfortable with. Suggestions that your child feels they contributed. Make sure your child has much of the say and is comfortable with the solutions that will be used.

The first day may be exciting for some. Remember, it may not be so exciting for others. Instead it can be a head filled with anxiety based on lack of control.
