Anxiety is a part of everyday life in the new millennium. But for people, it expresses itself much worse than for others. Anxiety symptoms that go beyond the typical expressions of unease and nervousness should not be ignored. While many people can expect to suffer an anxiety attack at some point in their life, recurring episodes of extreme anxiety are definitely not normal.

Anxiety itself is good. It serves as the body?s warning system that something may be amiss; that we need to move into a state of preparedness. Among these anxiety symptom are a rapid heartbeat, dry mouth and sudden perspiration. Surely nobody reading this has ever managed to escape those sensations.

But how many have been found themselves in stressful situations in which they became dizzy, grew short of breath, felt pain in their chest and a sudden need to urinate? While these are all common symptoms of everyday anxiety, if you find yourself feeling all of them, chances are you have gone beyond the norm and experiencing an actual anxiety attack. If you experience these symptoms on more than a few occasions, you may be to the point where you should consult a doctor.

Still, even these anxiety symptoms do not definitely mean you are experiencing an anxiety disorder. After all, the human body responds differently to varying situations of stress. For some people, the very thought of walking onto a stage and speaking to a large crowd of people would bring on all of the above symptoms without it necessarily indicating a disorder.

However, if in addition to the above, you also experience one or more of these anxiety symptoms, it is definitely past the point where you should at least be conducting some research. If you begin to experience deep feelings of apprehension, or even outright dread, of certain situations even when you are not anywhere near to being in those situations and you experience the physical symptoms, chances are you anxiety is to the point of a disorder. In addition, isolation of oneself from others can often be a sign of a more serious problem. Nervousness, jittery behavior, irritability, jumpiness; all of these are normal responses under certain circumstances, but if you notice a link between feeling them and either facing or just thinking about stress-inducing environments or events, it may be time to consider professional help.

Anxiety symptoms are a normal part of the day for most of us. Unless you get to work at your dream job and then go back to your dream home life, chances are you will experience a facing pulse, or a dry mouth today. It can be difficult to determine if the anxiety you are feeling is normal or something more. The worst thing to do is compare your reactions to anybody else; what may seem excessive to them might actually be normal for you. However, if you do find yourself experiencing these anxiety symptoms and you are concerned, definitely seek out the advice of friends and family to help locate the possible source of your anxiety.

One type of anxiety that is common is known as social anxiety. With this, you might have an overwhelming fear of being in public or social situations. Then in situations when you are around people, you feel embarrassed, at a loss for words when approached. Obviously, this is no way to live. Other forms of anxiety where hypnosis can make a significant difference include Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) and special phobias. For PTSD, you might have experienced something traumatic in your life whereby you now have nightmares or flashbacks. For example, survivors of 09/11, people who have lost a loved one in a car accident, or individuals who served in war are all prime examples of PTSD. For special phobias, this could include anything from a fear of animals to fear of flying to fear of spiders. Regardless, in both cases, you have lost control over your life but hypnosis is an excellent tool for giving you back control.

The type of hypnosis used and the longevity of treatment depend on the individual and the area of concern. However, by working with a qualified hypnotist or hypnotherapist, you will make improvement and be amazed at how much more enjoyable life can be. Typically, three to five hypnosis sessions will be enough for you to see a noticeable difference. Soon, you will not be nearly as anxious as you once were and eventually, not anxious at all. What Is Valerian?
For centuries, the tall perennial herb with pinkish flowers known as valerian (Valeriana officinalis) has been enlisted to help restless insomniacs get a sound night's sleep. Today this mild, nonaddictive sedative is quite popular both as a sleep aid and as an anxiety fighter, particularly in Germany, France, Belgium, and the United Kingdom. And in recent years its popularity has grown enormously in the United States as well.

Health Benefits of Valerian:
Although there has long been controversy over what makes valerian so effective as a relaxant, it is increasingly accepted that this herb does, in fact, work as the ancients once claimed it did. In addition to promoting sound sleep, valerian has a reputation for easing anxiety and relaxing tense muscles. It may also have a role to play in relieving digestive conditions, such as diverticulosis and irritable bowel syndrome.
Valerian added to bath water in the form of a very strong herbal tea or as an essential oil is said to have a calming effect, although specific scientific evidence is sparse.

Specifically, Valerian may help to:

Improve sleep.
In the brain, valerian is thought to bind to receptors for a nerve chemical called GABA (gamma-aminobutyric acid). By blocking some nerve impulses from reaching the brain, the herb seems to shorten the amount of time it takes to fall asleep as well as improve the quality of sleep that results. And, unlike some of the more commonly prescribed sleep medications, Valerian is not addictive. Nor does it cause morning grogginess (when taken at recommended doses), as some prescription drugs do.
Numerous studies of insomniacs have shown that those who take valerian fall asleep faster than participants given a placebo. The quality of sleep improves as well, according to several recent studies. In one placebo-controlled trial of 27 people with insomnia, Swedish researchers found that 89% of those who were given a valerian preparation reported improved sleep, with 44% rating their sleep as "perfect."
Even more impressive results emerged from a well-designed 1996 trial involving 121 insomnia sufferers. Among the benefits of Valerian root extract taken one hour before bedtime (2 tablets of 300 mg each): significantly improved sleep quality, ream recall, and sense of psychological well-being.

Valerian may also be useful for people without insomnia per se.
In a 1983 trial that involved 128 healthy people, those assigned to take a valerian root preparation were far more likely to fall asleep faster than those given a placebo. The Valerian group also tended to stay asleep longer. Overall sleep quality improved significantly, particularly in those who rated themselves as poor sleepers to start with.

Reduce nervous tension, anxiety, and restlessness.
German health authorities endorse the use of valerian for restlessness and sleeping disorders that are caused specifically by nervous conditions. In fact, anyone who suffers from stress, panic attacks, or other nervous conditions may want to give Valerian a try. Valerian is thought to lessen anxiety because in blocking brain receptors for the neurotransmitter GABA, it also inhibits nerve impulses and stress-related messages from reaching the brain. More research is needed, however.

Lessen stomach cramps and improve digestive system disorders.
Animal testing and clinical research indicates that Valerian has antispasmodic properties. This may explain why it's valuable for countering spasms of the muscle tissue in the digestive tract and easing the intestinal pain that frequently accompanies irritable bowel syndrome. The herb's calming effect may also contribute to healing; after all, many digestive disorders are provoked by stress.

What Your Anxiety Symptoms Are Really Telling You?

Are you suffering from the gnawing nagging feeling of overwhelming unsettled emotional discomfort? Is it effecting your self-esteem and motivation?

Most are familiar with the general anxiety disorders that can be triggered by fears, impending doom, obsessive-compulsive, post-traumatic stress and more. But what about other not so obvious things that raise apprehension and uneasiness that you can't explain?

What is at the root of your anxiety symptom? It may be buried deeply in your subconscious, but most likely you are just not currently aware of the cause. There are many possible things that can be the source of the disharmony leading to undesirable emotional feelings. What do you feel that you can't cope with? Does it relate to the general condition of your life?

What if you are feeling anxious because deep inside you know that you are not thinking and acting in ways that support your core self? You may not even be consciously aware of what is truly important to you, but your incongruent behavior is causing internal friction that your emotions are responding to. Not being aware of why you feel the way you do supports the anxiety, you feel powerless and unsure. But why are you uncertain?

It is normally based on your perception and subsequent interpretation of something. There can be some subtle things that are the cause of stress and anxiety.

Here are 5 places to look for some possible root causes of your anxiety symptom:

1) Personal integrity is compromised -- Are some of your thoughts and behavior not in alignment with your most important values? This situation can be tough to detect until you look for it, as you may not be clearly aware of your deep values. If there is a conflict between your behavior and your deepest core values you will feel emotionally unsettled. Your thoughts and actions must be congruent with your deepest values in order to feel harmonious.

2) Less than honest interactions -- Are you less than honest and forthright in your interactions with others? If you are living even small lies you may be fooling some of the people some of the time, but never yourself. Deep within, you know what's going on and your inner self will let you know when something is not right. However, if you are not aware of your inner thoughts and feelings you may not be sure what your anxious feelings are based on.

3) Cheating Your Potential -- Are you not utilizing all of your potential? Do you make excuses for not using all your potential? Are you full of reasons and justifications in an attempt to feel right about your less than full effort? You know this inside; you can't cheat yourself and get away with it. When you are consciously not aware of it you can feel out of control without knowing why. Not utilizing your full potential can be stressful and anxiety symptoms will come from your feeling not in control.

4) Stuck in the Procrastination trap -- You know that you are not getting done what you want to get done and what you are capable of doing, but can't seem to do anything about it. Also you become unsure that you can do anything about it since you have not been able to up to this point. When you get stuck in this cycle the frustration with yourself can turn into anxiety, as you don't know what is behind it, plus worrying whether you can ever change it.

5) Fearing your future without knowing why -- This relates to the first four items, in that if any of the above conditions are present you can easily feel unsure of your future. Facing the future with self confidence requires that you be well grounded in who you are and in touch with your potential. Not being secure and feeling unsure whether you can do anything about it is stressful and can lead to anxiety.

Stress and anxiety can go hand in hand as you are continuously aware of your feelings of uncertainty and the resulting fears. It can even be the cause of depression if the situation seems like it's hopeless.

The key is to root out these base causes of your emotional feelings, reassess them and change your perception to better align with the life you want.

Anxiety symptoms are red flags your inner referee is throwing up to notify you that something is not right, out of balance. If you let it go, just like a physical ailment, it gets worse and becomes more and more established. These self-concepts originated from some perceived need to protect or satisfy in some way. Since you are feeling unsettled, they are likely no longer supporting your best interest. Your inner self is making you aware of an opportunity to change for the better.

To discover what the sources of your stress and anxiety are and what were the benefits, ask yourself some probing questions to peel open your thoughts. Once your thoughts are revealed, then reassess and establish a new perception and interpretation of the situation or idea.

Start with a blank tablet and a pen or pencil. Get yourself calm and relaxed. Write the first question at the top, then without thinking write what ever thoughts come up without analyzing or judging -- just write. For example --

~Why am I feeling this way?

~What is my biggest fear in life?

~What is the worse that could happen regarding this fear?

~Why do I fear this?

~How can I think differently about this that will better serve me today?

~What am I most uncertain about today?

~Why am I uncertain about this?

~What benefit do or did I get from thinking this way?

~Do I need to continue thinking this way?

~What can I learn from this?

~What is a better way of looking at this?

Asking questions of yourself may not be easy at first, as your mind is not accustomed to thinking in this fashion. But with diligence, you will learn to allow your thinking to open up revealing much more about yourself than you were previously aware of, but it's there.

Also useful method to help to reveal your inner thoughts is to meditate on it. Meditation helps to calm and quiet the surface chatter that keeps you distracted and separated from your inner thoughts, allowing for their rediscovery.

Another beneficial self-improvement activity is to clarify, establish and define a solid foundation for yourself. Just as a tall building cannot be stable without a strong foundation, neither can a successful life. You can solidify your place in the universe, discover your purpose, align with intention, and establish a vision and a personal mission. You can clarify your core values, your potential, your strengths and how you will support your purpose.

With establishing a solid foundation for yourself you will elevate your self-concept, self-esteem, self-confidence and self-motivation --it's how to relieve stress, anxiety and depression. You will be able to grow and change without excessive fear, doubt and worry.

We have all experienced the sensation of being "called into action" by nervousness. It creates an increased feeling of excitement and it acts to heighten our realizations. Nervousness is a normal condition that serves to make us more aware and focused.

Anxiety differs from nervousness because it often occurs for no apparent reason and is persistent. It does not promote positive response to circumstance. If not recognized and dealt with effectively, anxiety will interfere with daily life and may even become chronic.

The effect of this kind of association to the experience of anxiety can severely distort an individual's decision-making abilities. In an attempt to understand what anxiety is, or why it has occurred, a person may repeatedly go to an emergency room or see several doctors. Some people may go for years without understanding what they are experiencing and live in constant fear as a result of their own unknowingness.

Some of the most well known classifications of anxiety include; Panic Disorder, Obsessive-Compulsiveness, Post-Traumatic Stress and various Phobias. The following will provide some insight into these classifications.

Panic:

Panic is a feeling of terror and is often referred to as an "attack." A person who experiences this type of anxiety may report any or all of the following symptoms:

* A pounding heart
* Feeling sweaty, weak, faint or dizzy
* Tingling or numbness of their hands
* Flushed or chilled sensations of their body
* Nausea
* Chest pain
* Smothering sensations
* A sense of loss of reality or control
* Fear of impending doom
* Thoughts that they are experiencing a heart attack

* Fearing that they are on the verge of death

Obsessive-Compulsiveness:

A person dealing with Obsessive-Compulsiveness feels unable to control their thoughts, urges or activities. The term Obsessive refers to the disturbing thoughts or images while Compulsiveness refers to the behaviors or rituals performed. Some examples of this type of anxiety include:

* Being obsessed with germs, causing a person to repeatedly wash their hands
* Frequent thoughts of violence, causing a person to fear that they will harm others
* Spending long periods of time touching things or counting
* Being pre-occupied by order or symmetry
* Having persistent thoughts of performing sexual acts that they find repulsive
* Having thoughts that are against their religious beliefs

Post Traumatic Stress:

Post Traumatic Stress is associated with an event that the individual has experienced. A person may have persistent frightening thoughts and memories of the event. They may feel emotionally numb toward people they were once close to. This type of anxiety may also include any or all of the following:

* Nightmares and disturbing recollections
* Sleep problems
* Feelings of detachment
* Being easily startled
* Loss of interest in usual activities
* Difficulty with affection
* Irritability
* Aggressiveness or even violence
* Avoidance of certain places or situations that could trigger memories

Phobias:

Phobias are a type of anxiety that are experienced as overwhelming and excessive fear. Phobic reactions include:

* Uncontrollable fear
* Profuse sweating
* Trembling
* Nausea
* Difficulty talking
* Fatigue
* Headaches
* Muscle aches
* Difficulty swallowing
* Irritability
* Hot flashes
* Lightheadedness
* Inability to concentrate

Help with Anxiety:

Many people suffering with anxiety can benefit by sharing their problems with others. This can be accomplished by talking with friends or attending support groups. There are many professionals who can help. Involvement with a like-minded online community would also be beneficial, as it would allow for an avenue of self-expression. Recent research shows that stress and anxiety can have very unwelcome effects on our health and wellbeing, by applying these four simple strategies we can keep day to day troubles contained and learn to cope with them with some levity and humour.

Life doesn't always go as planned. Stuff happens, and things can soon build into the proverbial mountains from molehills if we let them. Here are some pointers for keeping buoyant in the face of adversity.

1. Get Some Perspective
When problems occur, be specific about them. Speak with someone you know can help you be calm and objective, or take a few minutes to write your thoughts in a journal; anything to get them outside your head for some objective review can really help.

2. Put Negative Events in Quarantine
Keep them separate and don't let them spread. Negative events can be highly contagious! They have the ability to turn everything around them negative too, given half the chance. Don't let them. Put them in isolation and make sure they stay there.

Here's an example: Sally had some friends over for dinner; she spent ages planning, shopping and cooking. The meal was great, and everyone was happy and impressed with her efforts, but when it came to serving dessert, she dropped it ? all over the table ? splat!

Studies in cooperation with Taiyo Kagaku Co., The University of Shizuoka, and The Family Planning Institute of Japan have shown that women taking 200 mg L-Theanine daily have lower incidence of PMS symptoms. These symptoms include physical, mental, and social symptoms. Overall, a significant alleviation of PMS symptoms by L-Theanine was observed.

While still under investigation, L-Theanine appears to have a role in the formation of the inhibitory neurotransmitter Gamma Amino Butyric Acid (GABA). GABA blocks release of the neurotransmitters dopamine and serotonin, playing a key role in the relaxation effect.

Although GABA's age-related decline has not been documented in humans, a host of studies in mammals, including other primates, suggests that a similar process is at work in people.

Monkeys ages 26 and 32 -- considered old age for monkeys -- that got GABA directly delivered to their neurons responded to visual patterns, such as flashing vertical and horizontal lines, in much the same way as monkeys aged 7 to 9 years old did.

Without GABA delivery, the monkeys' aged brains had more difficulty firing neurons that specifically gauge various aspects of depth perception, motion and color. Instead, older monkeys have more random firings that make it difficult to observe visual nuances. In younger monkeys, GABA had no effect since their brains already had optimal GABA functioning.

L-Theanine is considered to be safe based on its historical use as a component of tea and on favorable toxicology studies. Tea is the most consumed beverage worldwide after water, and has been consumed for thousands of years by billions of people. It is estimated that a heavy tea drinker (6-8 cups daily) will consume between 200 to 400 mg of L-Theanine daily.

While dosage for depression and anxiety disorder remain individual, it is recommended to take 100 to 200 mg 1 to 3 times daily for anxiety relief. Based on the results of clinical studies, it has been established that L-Theanine is effective in single dosages in the range of 50-200 mg. It is suggested that subjects with higher levels of anxiety take a dose at the higher end of the effective range (100 - 200 mg) for overcoming anxiety.

The second page should summarize the social events and social situations where you felt comfortable and why you felt comfortable. How did you feel overall? While this may seem to be a waste of time, the journals will help you face and overcome your fears.

3) Set social goals for yourself and follow through on them. If you are extremely uneasy at the mall, then go to the mall and walk in. Then walk out, immediately. If your social anxiety seems to attack you when you are in the middle of a crowded building, walk to the center of the crowd, and immediately turn and walk away. Take small practical steps at the start and them move on to the more challenging issues you may have.

Finally, always talk to your Doctor openly and honestly. Take your medication and try to overcome your social anxiety so that you can experience the life that you deserve to live at the very fullest. Stressful social situations happen to everyone at some point in their lives and one out of every eight people know how you feel to be living with something much worse than 'one social situation', you are not alone at all and though there is little comfort in knowing that you aren?t alone , do know that you are understood.

Life doesn't always go as planned. Stuff happens, and things can soon build into the proverbial mountains from molehills if we let them. Here are some pointers for keeping buoyant in the face of adversity.

1. Get Some Perspective When problems occur, be specific about them. Speak with someone you know can help you be calm and objective, or take a few minutes to write your thoughts in a journal; anything to get them outside your head for some objective review can really help.

What causes anxiety? Well if we all knew that wouldnt life be a bed of roses. Childhood Abuse and Depression - Anxiety Lives On

It has been established that nature and nurture should not be taken as enemies or total opposites, but as two intertwined realities that function together to make up the human experience. Nature was designed for nurture.

Many recent and notable studies have documented the effects that early childhood experience can have on both the physical and chemical makeup of the brain. In particular, childhood abuse and/or neglect can permanently alter an individual's physiology. These physiological changes may lead to a greater likelihood of the person suffering from depression or anxiety later in life.

Groundbreaking results from a major study of depressed women in the US have shown that women who were abused as children have abnormally elevated hormonal responses to stress compared to women with no history of abuse. It suggests that childhood abuse is associated with persistent hyperactivity of the hormonal system associated with the stress response and this may cause greater vulnerability to psychiatric disorders in adulthood.

The study, headed by Dr. Charles Nemeroff at Emory University, looked at women diagnosed with clinical depression who had been abused as children; depressed women with no past abuse; and healthy women. Each person was given a moderately stressful experience and asked to perform simple mathematic problems aloud for a panel of stalwart non expressive judges.

Cortisol and ACTH (two hormones that play a critical role in a person's response to stress) were measured in each subject while she completed the task. It was found that the levels of these hormones were especially pronounced in women who were abused as children and who also had current depression. In fact, their ACTH response indicators were more than six times those of the healthy women.

In addition to high levels of stress hormones, other studies by the same group found that women who had been abused as children had abnormal development of the brain's hippocampus, which suggests another physical result of early abuse that could lead to permanent brain abnormalities in later life.

Other brain structures can also be affected by early abuse or neglect. While the basic unit of the brain is in place at birth, neuronal pathways for the body's reaction to different experiences are still developing.

There is a critical period of time in a child's first three years of life during which most of these pathways are formed. If a child receives primarily negative stimulation early in life, pathways for forming lasting relationships and responding to positive experiences can be stunted or destroyed. While this may be a reaction to help the child survive, it can cause permanent difficulties for the individual.

Other research shows that the brains of severely neglected children tend to be smaller than average with underdeveloped areas in the cortex. The long term implications of this are still being examined, but it shows one more way in which nurture or lack of it can affect a person's biological make-up.

The knowledge that nature and nurture are two crucial aspects to a person's health will undoubtedly prove to be a very useful tool in the research and treatment of psychiatric illness and may lead to even more effective treatments in the future.

The GED Test: How to Manage Test Anxiety

If the number one fear is public speaking, then the number two fear is probably test taking. GED students are no different than most students and adult learners who experience anxiety or tension at test time. And they have just as much -- if not more -- at stake, since passing the GED test is so critical to educational and career opportunities.

Test anxiety is normal, and a healthy amount of test stress can help test candidates and even improve their score. Stress launches adrenaline, a brain chemical that can make a test candidate more alert. But too much test stress inhibits clear thought, creates fatigue and reduces performance. Months of studying are ineffective if you freeze or fall apart at the GED test site. So what's the right balance between a healthy and productive amount of test stress and the kind of anxiety that overcomes test candidates?

Test Anxiety Strategies

1. Preparation: Consider the two-part test required for a drivers license. Most drivers are able to quickly memorize the rules of the road a day or two before the 20-minute test, and perform without problem once the testing officer is in the passenger seat. But what would happen to a driving candidate who never looked at the driver's manual, or had never been on the road? Not only would this want-to-be motorist fail to perform, there'd be high anxiety in the driver's seat.

Preparing for the GED is the best way to reduce test anxiety and perform well. A good preparation program should include study and GED practice tests in all areas of the 7.5 hour test battery, along with marathon study sessions reflective of the actual test. A good study program increases and improves knowledge. You can't cram for the GED test like a driving test; you need to thoroughly learn knowledge, and know how to use it.

Practice tests teach test candidates how to use knowledge, provide testing experience and are excellent indicators for measuring skill strengths and weaknesses. Official GED practice tests also provide the best way to get familiar with the test structure, question and answer layout, test timing and test expectations. Then, at test time, the test will be a known factor instead of an unknown factor. Test familiarity, along with knowledge ownership, helps candidates have confidence in their abilities and demonstrate their skills. These are prime strategies in reducing fear, overcoming test anxiety, and ensuring a solid test performance.

2. Time Management: Many GED students express concerns about the timing of the test. Some may be slow test takers; some don't have a feel for how to pace themselves through the test. And others get easily distracted by test problems -- they concentrate on a few problems and score well but find they're soon out of time and can't complete the whole test. Or, test candidates may rush through the test because of time concerns -- while they finish test sections early they later learn their answers were incorrect. But there's no score reward for finishing first, or finishing fast.

Timing varies for each test, and the full battery includes science, social studies, reading and writing and the two-part math test. But on average, allow yourself about 1.25 minutes for each question during study sessions. Practice test-taking and problem-solving using this average to develop or improve time management skills. This strategy will serve to reduce test anxiety about timing, and help candidates learn the art of pacing.

3. Mind & Body Prep: While test candidates ensure that their abilities and time management skills are sharp, they'll also want to explore mental and physical ways to reduce test stress and incorporate stress reducers into their GED study program. Good nutrition, exercise and healthy rest patterns are important, since the GED test is a scholarly thinking marathon. And knowing how to relax at test time is equally important; learn and practice relaxation techniques during long study sessions.

4. Know the Cues: Test anxiety doesn't just happen. It happens on cue. And for many GED test candidates, anxiety is a habit. Just like the anxiety response is learned, it can be unlearned or shifted to a level where anxiety works for the test, instead of against it. Here are some typical test stress cues and strategies to manage them:

-- Feeling overwhelmed? Take it step by step. Read directions carefully. Skip questions which seem overwhelming and move through another part first. Then return.

-- Nervous and jittery? Test burnout halfway through? Avoid processed foods, fast foods, along with snacks and beverages with high-sugar content. Avoid caffeine.

-- Feeling tense? Stiff neck? Eye strain? Change positions. Stretch. Breathe deeply. Rest your eyes. Clear your mind. Start afresh.

-- Blank? Frozen? Fearful? Relax. Skip the question and go on. You're in control. You're ready ... you're doing your best. Take the test at your own pace, and the pacing you've learned and practiced will come back to you, along with the knowledge in your vault.

-- Test fatigue? Eat a healthy snack. Use relaxation techniques. Pause. Clear your mind. Give yourself positive reinforcement. And visualize your goal.

-- Just a little anxious? Expect it. Surrender to it. Even welcome it. Know that some anxiety can help you perform, provide energy, and increase thinking clarity. Acknowledge test stress as a further reminder of the importance of your goal. Make it work for you.

Women and babies have been interrelated since the very beginning. It is a natural phenomenon and there is nothing unusual about it. All young women want to bear a child or in other words become a mother. Anxiety disorders are the most common mental health problem, and include panic disorders, agoraphobia, generalized anxiety disorder, social anxiety, and post-traumatic stress disorder. Anxiety disorders are caused by both a genetic predisposition and environmental factors.

Generalized anxiety disorder,a relatively common disorder affecting 3-4% of the population, turns daily life into a state of worry, anxiety, and fear. This disorder is characterized by excessive worry and rumination over everyday events which even the sufferer recognizes as being excessive. Physical symptoms include of generalized anxiety may include headaches, trembling, twitching, irritability, frustration, inability to concentrate, and insomnia. Mild symptoms of social phobia and/or panic may sometimes occur, such as feelings of self-consciousness and fear of being trapped in enclosed spaces. Symptoms can vary from hour to hour or day to day.

Social anxiety disorder,or social phobia, affects 7-8% of the population. This type of anxiety disorder affects 15 million Americans in any given year. Sufferers feel as though they are being watched and judged in every social interaction, and become so fearful that they avoid people altogether. Sufferers know that their fear is irrational, but they cannot overcome it, and often become reclusive.

People with panic disorders have acute physical symptoms which can lead them to believe that they have a serious physical disease. They may fear that they are having a heart attack, that they're about to lose control, or that they're going crazy. Patients with panic disorders may have sensations of breathlessness, suffocation, dizziness, and lightheadedness. Often these patients make repeated use of emergency medical facilities, convinced they are having heart attacks or that their lives are danger from some acute physical disorder.

Agoraphobia is a reaction to panic attacks that occur unpredictably and frequently in many places, thus making the person with agoraphobia feel unsafe when leaving the familiarity of their homes. Panic/agoraphobia affects approximately 5-6% of the population.

Posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is an anxiety disorder usually occurs after an individual experiences or witnesses severe or life-threatening trauma. In the US, Post Traumatic Stress Disorder has a lifetime prevalence of 8-10% and accounts for considerable disability and morbidity. One study found the prevalence of PTSD in a sample of adolescent boys to be 3.7% and adolescent girls to be 6.3%. Approximately 30% of men and women who have spent time in a war zone experience PTSD.

The individual initially responds to the precipitating event with intense fear, helplessness, or horror. The patient later develops a disorder characterized by persistently re-experiencing the event, with symptoms of numbness, avoidance, and hyperarousal, resulting in significant distress or functional impairment. To meet the full criteria for PTSD, these symptoms should be present for a minimum of 1 month following the initial traumatic event.

Events which cause PTSD include natural disasters, violent personal or sexual assaults, war, or severe accidents. PTSD can be acute (symptoms lasting <3 mo), chronic (symptoms lasting >3 mo), or of delayed onset (6 mo elapses from event to symptom onset).

PTSD is associated with brain changes in the amygdala, a structure in the brain which processes primitive emotions such as fear and the fight/flight response. Traumatic events can lead to fear conditioning with resultant activation of the amygdala and associated structures such as the hypothalamus, locus ceruleus, periaqueductal gray, and parabrachial nucleus. This activation and the accompanying autonomic neurotransmitter and endocrine activity produce many of the symptoms of PTSD. The orbitofrontal cortex exerts an inhibiting effect on this activation. The hippocampus also may have a modulating effect on the amygdala. However, in people who develop PTSD, the orbitofrontal cortex appears less capable of inhibiting this activation.

Females may be at a higher risk than males because of higher rates of traumatic events, such as being victims of crimes and abuse in personal relationships. Sexual assault probably has the most impact on women, and trauma from combat is more likely to cause the disorder in men. PTSD can occur at any age, including during childhood.

The National Center for Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) was created within the Department of Veterans Affairs created the National Center for PTSD in 1989, in response to a Congressional mandate to address the needs of veterans with military-related PTSD. In all anxiety disorders, cognitive behavioral therapy is often helpful, combined with anxiolytic drugs to ease acute symptoms. Patients with anxiety often also suffer from depression, and antidepressants are often also used.
