Most people unfamiliar with anxiety see it as just a simple case of the nerves. Those of us who live with anxiety know it is much more than that.

Anxiety is similar to fear, yet very different. Let me explain. Fear is a rational emotional response to a real threat. Anxiety is an irrational emotional response to an imagined threat. However it feels very real to those of us who suffer with anxiety on a daily basis.

Example: Imagine you are walking down a dark deserted road and you turn around to see a man coming at you with a gun. This is real... this is fear.

Now imagine you are walking down a familiar street in broad daylight and you imagine some disaster is about to happen, to you, and without warning. There is no visual threat, it is all imagined, though very real in the mind of a person suffering anxiety. This is imagined... this is anxiety.

Social anxiety or social phobia is often misdiagnosed. Often, you are just labeled as being shy.

"Oh, you are just shy?" Are you sick and tired of hearing that? Are you wondering what is wrong with you? Do you feel like no one understands? You are not alone!

I lived with "shyness" all my life. Everyone told me to just "get over it." I wanted to scream! Something is wrong with me! I can't just get over it!

Then I got older. The problem with my "shyness" got worse. Other symptoms started to arise. Depression, anxiety, panic attacks, agoraphobia, and many others.

If you are still wondering if you are just shy, or if it is something more, maybe this will help.

Do you worry for days, weeks, months about an event you have to attend?
Do you immediately start coming up with excuses not to attend an event?
Do you have an extreme fear of being judged by others?

Do you find it almost impossible to use the phone?

Some of these you may do, some you may not, and there may be other things you do or avoid that is not on this list. It should give you some points to ponder. Notice a couple of key words in the examples above. Extreme and Avoid.

Someone who is shy may blush when meeting someone new. Someone with social anxiety may also blush when meeting someone new. However, this person may also feel nauseous, light headed, and tremble. Their heart might race, they may sweat excessively, their mouth and throat may get extremely dry, they may have panic feelings and want to find the nearest exit.

It is imperative for anyone with these kinds of feelings seek professional assistance.

Many of the symptoms we feel during an anxiety or panic attack are very real physical reactions by our body, even though the threat may be more a product of our mind than it is a reality.

Throughout my years of learning do conquer my anxiety disorder, I learned that a) there is no instant cure or "quick fix" and b) no single avenue of treatment alone, such as medications, will be an effective, long term solution.

One of the single most effective ways of reducing the debilitating physical reactions your body has to a perceived threat (which is partly what an anxiety attack is) is to learn deep breathing techniques.

Once you learn to control your breathing, when you feel anxiety attack coming on you'll be able to quickly relax and reduce those feelings. You'll quickly feel much better, and what a huge step that will be!

Part of what happens when your mind perceives danger is it shortens up your breathing, producing a lot of the choking, panicking, fast heart beats that you feel.

It's important for you to use these breathing techniques before or right when you feel anxiety coming on. However, start practicing any time you get a chance, at least once a day.

You'll want to practice slow, steady breathing through your nose. To be sure you're doing this technique well; slowly inhale through your nose, while counting to 6. Hold your breath for a second or two, then slowly exhale also while counting to 6, hold for a second or two, and repeat.

Also try and breathe using your stomach and not your chest. To test this, place your hand on your stomach as you breathe, and you should feel it moving slowly up and down with your inhales and exhales.

Now practice this each day, when you're driving to work, or relaxing after work would be great. Allow yourself to relax while doing this. Start using this technique when you start to feel anxiety coming on, or when you know you'll be heading into a situation that usually causes a problem with your anxiety disorder, even before you start to feel the symptoms come on!

This is just one of the techniques, when combined with a holistic "life" approach to anxiety disorders and panic attacks that can allow you to live anxiety free!

It can be tough to deal with managing your anxiety while in a relationship. Maintaining a relationship is tough enough let alone having to deal with your anxieties. As a result, here is a list of techniques and suggestions on what to do in managing your anxieties while being in a relationship.

Sometimes, it helps to be able to talk to someone about our stressful situations. Talking to a trusted friend, counselor, or clergyman can not only make us feel better, but they might be able to give you additional advice and insights on how to deal with your current problem.

Anxiety is a natural human reaction. And contrary to popular opinion, anxiety can be beneficial because it alerts poeple to potential dangers and gives off an adrenaline rush that can help them accomplish a task in record time.

Fortunately, among the psychological disorders, anxiety problems are one of the most common and the most treatable. Combinations of medications and behavior therapy are often given. Symptoms of anxiety problems include fast heartbeat and palpitations, chest pains and difficulty in breathing, anxious thoughts that persist even without any concrete reason, dizziness and nausea, sweating, trembling, difficulty in concentrating, fearful thoughts and feelings of disorientation and claustrophobia.

Below are the types of anxiety disorders as mentioned in the DSM-IV.

Generalized Anxiety Disorder is characterized by excessive but unwarranted worries that a person cannot stop having. Although most people will experience these kinds of feelings every once in a while, a disorder is only diagnosed if the feelings persist for six months and start to affect work and the person?s relationships with other people. Some of the common symptoms that people should watch out for are physiological reactions such as headaches, trembling, muscle tension, sweating, and trouble staying or falling asleep. There are also bouts of restlessness and sweating.

Panic disorder is another type of anxiety disorder characterized by feelings of terror that strikes so suddenly without immediate cause. Often, people who are having panic attacks feel pains in their chest with their heartbeats going fast. Some will also feel lightheadedness and even nausea. They will find it hard to breathe and may feel unwarranted fears. Although most attacks usually last for about a few minutes, there are some that last for almost ten minutes and even those that continue on for an hour. A disorder is diagnosed when the attacks happen in a time frame of just four weeks.

We fear a lot of things but there are some people who are quite irrational with their fears. These fears on things are called phobias. There is a long list of phobia forms, having a specific name for each item that is feared. A person, for instance, who is afraid of open spaces has what psychologists like to call agoraphobia. Phobias are characterized by extreme anxiety and even panic attacks when confronted by the object being feared. Many of the symptoms that are felt during panic attacks are also felt during phobic episodes.

Post-traumatic stress disorder also falls under anxiety disorders. PTSD, as it is often called, often developed after experiencing, witnessing or participating in a traumatic and terrorizing event such as death, war, torture and other extreme circumstances. PTSD is characterized by intense anxiety and nightmares at night. People who have PTSD also find it difficult to sleep and to concentrate on things. Often, anxiety attacks go to the extreme when confronted with situations that have similarities with the one experienced.

8 Tips for Managing Stress 1. Take time out to savor the fresh scent of nature, especially flowers. The sight and the fragrance that flowers bring can be great relief to a tired, irritated, or dragged feeling. If you love nature, nothing is more invigorating than flowers and plants. They represent nature in its true essence.

2. Examine the cause of stress and anxiety. Is it the result of doing something you don't like to do, yet you have to face it just the same. In such a case, picture in your mind, an image what you would like to do and substitute this image to the thing you don't like to do. Picture yourself doing something your heart wants to do instead of what your brain tells you to do. Somehow, this strategy of imagery helps to lessen the tiring weight of the thing you despise to act upon. In this stress relieving process, your task gets done with less resistance on your part and it would even probably reach the point that you would enjoy doing it. Before you even know it, the job is already done and probably with favorable results.

3. Gather physical energy with energy food like Ginseng. You can get it at most health food stores. You can either take it as a tea drink or mix it in your cooking for a wholesome meal. Ginseng comes in a variety of strengths. The more potent it is, the better your physical (and mental) performance will be. If you're not very familiar with it, just ask your health food store representative and they will gladly help in it.

4.Take time out to regain your composure. Emotional stress or burnout can be equated to an individual who could use a time out from the hustles of life. This is similar to a coach of a basketball team asking for a time out to come up with a winning game plan when his team is not playing at its peak. Managing stress also means taking advantage of this time out to meditate and relax those frenzied nerves.

5.Take time out to empty your mind. Pick up and round up useful memories and discard those damaging emotions and negative thoughts.

6. Discover a newfound freedom, free from emotional drain. Go on a picnic with the family, a camping trip out in the woods, or a weekend excursion to a totally different environment.

7. Listen to relaxing music. It lifts you emotionally. You may want to choose specific sounds that can relieve a person from stress like soft classical melodies.

8. Indulge. It's quite common to hear from somebody: "I just want to get home and soak myself in a bathtub." Quite true, this can help overcome burnout. Better yet, go to a spa where you can get a stress reduction package from massage to whirlpool baths.

That's not to say that dogs don't have emotions - any dog owner knows better. But most will agree that dogs aren't planners - they live completely in the moment - a skill humans can only attempt.

The only time to correct a dog for improper behavior is when you catch the dog in the act. Revisiting the scene of the crime doesn't help. The dog doesn't remember committing the crime. Yelling at the dog when you find the mess teaches the dog that finding a mess is bad. Therefore, in dog logic, it will learn to hide the mess, not refrain from creating it.

If you've been tempted to accuse your dog of "spiteful" behavior because it does leave messes when you're gone, it's time to rethink what's going on. Your dog isn't telling you that it's angry you left - it's telling you it's anxious and unsure when you're not there.

It's been said many times that dogs are pack animals. If you are the leader of the pack - as you should be - then your dog is, for its entire life, a juvenile member of the group. Your dog may be a victim of separation anxiety; it doesn't know what to do when its leader isn't there to tell him.

Now that we understand, somewhat, how a dog thinks, we can use that to create the behavior we want. Crate training your dog is a good way to alleviate many sources of anxiety - both yours and your dog's. A crate, or cage, is civilization's answer to a cave or den. Your dog can feel safe and secure in its den. A crate should be big enough to allow the dog to stand up, turn around, and lie down. That's it.

Don't project your claustrophobia onto your dog. It likes feeling safe, secure and enclosed. It likes not being responsible for checking out every noise. It's happy when it has no decisions to make. Never let a dog make a decision - it will choose wrong.

There are people who resist the idea of a crate. They think they are being kind to the dog. And there are some dogs who do not need their crates past puppyhood. But if your dog is prone to separation anxiety, you'll both be better off with a crate. If you've never used a crate, or put it away as your dog matured, introduce it gradually. Leave it out, door open. Feed the dog in the crate. Throw toys into the crate for it to fetch. Never, ever use the crate as punishment, nor as a substitute for a trip outside to eliminate. Dogs shouldn't be left alone more than six to eight hours. If your schedule requires an animal to be left alone 10 or 12 hours a day - get a dogwalker, or settle for a cat.

When you begin crate training, only leave the dog in the crate for a few minutes. Have a special treat or toy that the dog gets only in his crate. Many people use a hollow rubber toy with a bit of peanut butter or soft cheese spread inside. Happily tell your dog it's time to "kennel," (the word you choose doesn't matter, just be consistent) and put the toy in the crate.

If the dog doesn't come - go get it. Never tell your dog to "come" to you for something it doesn't enjoy. Place it in the crate, close the latch and walk away. Just a few minutes the first time. If the dog whines or cries, ignore it. When it's quiet, let the dog out and tell her she's wonderful.

Build up the time your dog is left in the crate gradually. Conventional wisdom says that the first 15 minutes are the best indicator. If the dog settles within that time he'll be fine. And you'll both be happy - Fido has no decisions to make, and you'll have no messes to clean.

About Baby?s Separation Anxiety

How do I feel about my child?s separation anxiety? Honestly, it?s absolutely one of the most delightful feelings I really enjoy as a mom.

I remember when my son was between 8-9 months old. Just like every mother, I couldn?t forget those moments.

At that time, he often asked for more attention from me rather than from anybody in the house. No matter where he was or who was holding him, as soon as he saw me, he suddenly cried as if he was asking me to hold him.

When I came close to him, he abruptly opened his arms and looked so happy. His cry stopped in a moment. It was truly an unspoken feeling I had experienced.

But there was also time when he acted differently from what I had expected. When I went for work, I thought he would cry hard to see me leaving him. I hugged him tight and kissed his face again and again.

I told him, ?Baby, Mommy have to go to work now. Eat and drink a lot, okay? And have a good nap. I?ll be back. Love you much. Bubye.?

Sometimes he kept looking at me when I said so. I expected him to start weeping. But it didn?t happen. I wondered why. I found out later that he was interested with the wheels of the car I traveled in everyday.

Whenever the car started to run, my son always kept his eyes on the wheels. Looking at them spinning must have been very exciting to him. I just smiled, though my heart broke a little. I soothed myself by thinking that it was good for him being curious of strange things.

My son is a baby who has sleeping problem. Throughout the night during his sleep, he often woke up several times. If he woke up and didn?t find me nearby, he would cry out loud, making the whole house panic as if something really bad happen.

When I got into the bedroom, he would crawl toward me, and then I hugged him. He?d be calm afterward. Breastfeeding really worked to put him back to sleep.

Thank God I decided to breastfeed him so that I wouldn?t be engaged with the rush of preparing formula during the night. Yes, I chose to breastfeed him in nighttimes, even though he still got formula in day times.

Maybe this breastfeeding activity had created the bond between us. I enjoyed it, and still until now. This might also what made my son didn?t want to stay away from me.

If your baby or child has the same characteristic as my son has, I?m sure you have the same feeling as I do. If you think that your baby?s cry (for being away from you) annoy you, just remember that it won?t last forever.

Separation anxiety is a phase in your child?s development during his early years of life. Almost all children go through this experience. What I can suggest you is just enjoy these intimate moments before they?re gone along with your child?s growth.

From what I?ve heard from my friends about this, you?re gonna miss the moments. To me, even now, I really don?t want the phase fade away.

Wait, wait. There?s one more thing I?d like to share with you, which you may not think will make your child comfortable. I remember my friend told me that if you?re going somewhere, don?t forget to tell your child that you?ll be back. Between the ages of 8 months and 2 years, it's normal for a child to cry when its mother leaves the room or a stranger enters it. Neither overprotection nor constant punishment will change the situation. It's a natural stage that usually passes on its own. If, however, an older child continues to react to potential separations with unreasonable fear, professional help may be needed. If the problem isn't resolved, it can damage the child's self image, leading to teenage and adult emotional problems.

Causes

Separation anxiety disorder may run in families. It is most likely to affect shy, nervous children. The disorder is often triggered by a major change in the child's life, such as a death or hospitalization, the parents' separation or divorce, a new school, or a move.

Signs/Symptoms

Children with this disorder express their anxiety in a variety of ways:

Screaming or temper tantrums when left with others
Insistence on sleeping with parents in their room
Difficulty going to sleep
Fear of the dark
Nightmares
Fear of sleeping away from home
Difficulty settling down
Fear of meeting new people
Clinging to parents at home
Following parents from room to room
Worrying about the family's safety in the home
Fear of going to school
Headaches, bellyaches, or body aches when a separation approaches
Sadness
Quietness
Lack of concentration

Care

This disorder poses the threat of a vicious circle in which the child's dependence and the parents' protectiveness reinforce and amplify each other. For that reason, both the parents and the child may need to see a counselor. If the youngster refuses to go to school, an immediate priority is to arrange a return as quickly as possible.

Risks

If this problem isn't successfully resolved, it can lead to greater emotional problems, such as depression, as the child grows older.
WHAT YOU SHOULD DO

Try to prepare the child for a change such as a divorce or a move. Talk openly about such changes and encourage him to voice his worries. Give reassurance that everyone will be safe.

Discuss the problem with the child's teachers. They may be able to give you tips for dealing with this disorder both at home and at school.

Praise and reward the child for overcoming his fears.

persistently and excessively fearful or reluctant to be alone or without major attachment figures at home or without significant adults in other settings

persistent reluctance or refusal to go to sleep without being near a near a major attachment figure or to sleep away from home
repeated nightmares involving the theme of separation

repeated complaints of physical symptoms (such as headaches, stomachaches, nausea, or vomiting) when separation from major attachment figures occurs or is anticipated
The duration of the disturbance is at least 4 weeks.
The onset is before age 18 years.

The disturbance causes clinically significant distress or impairment in social, academic (occupational), or other important areas of functioning.

The disturbance does not occur exclusively during the course of a Pervasive Developmental Disorder, Schizophrenia, or other Psychotic Disorder and, in adolescents and adults, is not better accounted for by Panic Disorder With Agoraphobia.
